WASHINGTON New Jersey lawmakers reacted along party lines Thursday to President Barack Obamas announcement that Americans can keep canceled health insurance policies for a year as companies and consumers adjust to the demands of the Affordable Care Act.The announcement came amid criticism that Obama broke a promise that people who liked their insurance policies could keep them. Some of those policies have been canceled because they dont comply with the law.New Jersey Democrats backed the presidents decision, while Republicans characterized it as a desperate act designed to salvage a fatally flawed law.Todays announcement reflects the presidents commitment to be flexible as his administration works to minimize any short-term problems from the launch of the Affordable Care Act, Democratic Sen. Cory Booker said. The Obama administration also has come under fire for the trouble-plagued rollout of HealthCare.gov, the federal governments online marketplace for people shopping for affordable insurance under the Affordable Care Act.The laws rollout has been flawed, as the president himself has said, and theres still much work to do, Booker said. But we cant lose sight of why this bill was passed. We must not go backward -- back to the bad old days when New Jerseyans were being denied coverage for pre-existing conditions and tens of thousands were unable to access quality, affordable health care.Booker said his office will monitor the impact of the changesmocratic Sen. Robert Menendez was not available to comment because he was on a flight to California for a U.S.-Spain Council meeting, his office saidmocratic Rep. Rob Andrews said he supports the presidents decision. It will help a lot of people who need help, Andrews said.He said he wasnt sure if it would quell criticism of the health care law.I dont know about the politics of this, he said. Im trying to focus on the people involved.Democratic Rep. Donald Payne, Jr., said this was the only choice for Obama, given the problems affecting HealthCare.gov.(Page 2 of 2)Even if the web site is fixed by the end of November, that only leaves people with a month to enroll, he said. We cannot leave people out in the cold without health care, and it only seems fair for those who have been unable to get onto the web site and enroll in a health care plan.Payne said that despite the web site problems, he is encouraging New Jersey residents to log onto HealthCare.gov and compare their current insurance plans to ones being offered on the web site.New Jersey is among 36 states that opted to use the federal site instead of creating their own online health care exchanges.Once people examine their current plans and see what their insurance covers, or doesnt cover, they may realize that the health care exchanges provide more comprehensive, preventive coverage that will likely suit their needs at a lower cost, Payne said.New Jersey Republicans criticized the presidents announcement. The presidents so-called fix is nothing other than a lifeboat with a hole in it, Republican Rep. Scott Garrett said. Obamacare is not fixable. The American people need a full and permanent delay of this unworkable law.Republican Rep. Leonard Lance, a member of the House Energy and Commerce Committees health subcommittee, wondered if Obama has the legal authority under the Constitution to amend the health care law unilaterally. To help the millions of Americans -- including 800,000 in New Jersey -- who have lost their health insurance under Obamacare, the president should work with Congress on a permanent legislative solution, he said. The House is set to vote Friday on legislation the White House opposes that would allow Americans to keep existing health care plans through 2014. Some Senate Democrats said they hoped to continue with plans for a similar measure. Page Previous 1 2 Next
